![]() To answer someone asking "Why do people bother trying to make 3D games in Blender Game Engine anyway?" over Unity or UDK, I would say that it's because of knowledge of the tool and basic understanding of gameplay mechanics. From what I've observed, many GameMaker users are able to achieve their goals. The OGRE engine has been growing since 2001 and has become one of the most popular open-source graphics rendering engines, used in various projects such as games, simulators, educational software, interactive art, scientific visualization, and more. As a developer, if you use a tool you're familiar with and it fits your project, you can reach your goal. Similarly, BGE beginners should focus on optimizing their scenes before asking for complex features like millions of polygons. As a user, I don't care about the tool used to create a game. I'm only interested in playing fun games. While some developers may have advanced shaders or special effects, I don't think that's essential to a good gaming experience. The videos you showed us (Sonic) actually seem to provide more fun for the user than 95% of FPS games on the BGE forums. People who start making a game with 3D often lack basic knowledge of 2D gameplay mechanics. The third dimension is already challenging enough for them.
